Third Sunday of Pentecost

Old Testament – Ezekiel 17:22-24

Ezekiel sees a vision of God taking twigs from a large redwood tree and planting

them. These twigs become such a large redwood tree that all sorts of animals can

live in the tree. This is a symbol for our faith lives. God plants His word in our

hearts and we need to nurture it. When we do, our faith will grow beyond our

wildest dreams.

Old Testament – Psalm 92

Psalm 92 is a song singing the praises of God and his faithfulness and steadfast

love. Psalm 92 encourages us to make music to God by using instruments and our

voices. Listen to it sung below.

New Testament - Mark 4:26-34

Here Jesus tells two parables. Parables are stories that are supposed to make us

think. His first parable is about a farmer who sows grain everywhere and then

just waits for the harvest to come. Then when the harvest comes the farmer

harvests the grain.

The second parable is Jesus telling us that the kingdom of God is like a mustard

seed. A mustard seed is very small. If you were to buy a seed packet, there

would be between 350 to 600 seeds depending upon the variety of mustard.

Here in California, we think of mustard as a large plant. But, in Israel, it is an actual

tree. Jesus tells our faith when we start out is very small but over time but

becomes very big.

Younger Childrens Lesson:

God tells us today that learning about Him is a lifelong journey. He shows us that

our faith starts out small and then can become huge. God shows this in a vision

to Ezekiel in the Old Testament. Ezekiel sees small twigs that become a huge

redwood tree. In the New, Testament Jesus teaches us that even faith as small as

a mustard seed can grow and become large. Think of God hold you in the

palm of His hand like He is holding this tree.
