The First Sunday of Lent

What is Lent and Why do we observe Lent?

Lent is the forty days before Easter. The season of Lent is observed by giving up

things, living more simply, and drawing closer to God. We observe Lent because

we remember that Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness for forty days before

He began His ministry. So we pray that observing Lent will prepare us for

doing our ministry to serve Him.

Old Testament – Genesis 9:8-17

We know the story of Noah and the Ark. Today’s lesson tells us what happened

after Noah, his family, and all the creatures left the Ark. God speaks with Noah.

God makes an eternal promise to Noah, his family, and all living creatures. This

promise is that God will never again destroy the earth by flooding it. As a sign of

His promise, God tells Noah that God will place His bow in the sky every time God

thinks about His promise. God’s bow is the rainbow. When we see a rainbow, we

can be comforted with His promise. This promise gives us courage when there

are floods or scary storms. We know God keeps His promises. Below are five fun

videos with rainbow crafts such as bookmarkers and cards. Make one of them or

all of them and remember God’s promise in the rainbow.

Old Testament – Psalm 25

Many people believe that King David wrote Psalm 25 when his son, Absalom, had

turned against David. This psalm asks for deliverance and the ability to trust God

even though bad things are happening. This song asks God to teach us His ways

and leads us on the right paths.

Below is Psalm 25 sung. Psalm 25 verses are translated into English and Korean.

This reminds us that God’s help is for people everywhere and of all cultures.

Enjoy listening.

New Testament – 1 Peter 3:18-22

The Apostle Peter is the author and his close friend, Silvanus wrote it down.

Some scholars believe that this book was written by someone else in honor of

Peter after Peter’s death. We remember that Peter was one of Jesus’ closest

friends and Jesus chose Peter to be the leader of the church. Below is a video

summary of 1 Peter and 1 Peter means to Christians.

Today’s lesson from 1 Peter tells us Christ died to save all of us from sin so Christ

could bring us to God. We learn that baptism is a sign that we have been saved

from sin through Christ’s death and resurrection. We have reminded Jesus Christ

now sits at the right hand of God in heaven. Have you been baptized? If not, ask

yourself if you believe Jesus died for you. If the answer is yes, then speak to your

parents and Pastor about baptism.

New Testament - Mark 1:9-15

Today’s lesson shows us that Jesus was baptized by John The Baptist John The

Baptist sees God’s Spirit descending on Jesus like a dove. John also hears a voice

from heaven saying to Jesus, “You are my Beloved Son and I am well pleased with

you.” Immediately after Jesus is baptized, Jesus goes into the wilderness for forty

days. Jesus did not eat for forty days and was tempted by Satan. After Jesus

comes back, He starts His ministry. Jesus says “The time is fulfilled, the kingdom

of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel.”

Below is a video showing the events of today’s lesson and last week’s lesson. It is

filmed in Israel where these events took place.

Younger Children's Lesson:

What is Lent?

Lent is the forty days before Easter. Jesus went into the desert for forty days to

get ready to teach Israel. How will you get ready for Easter?

Old Testament – Genesis 9:8-15

Noah and all the living creatures are now out of the Ark. God tells Noah that God

will never flood the entire earth again. God makes this promise forever to all

people and all animals. God gives the rainbow as a sign of His promise. Today

find a rock and paint a rainbow on it. Keep it in a place where you see it often and

remember God’s promise.

New Testament – Mark 1:9-15

Today the gospel tells us about Jesus’ forty days in the desert and why He spent

40 days in the desert. Watch the video below.
