Pentecost Sunday 8

Old Testament – 1 Kings 3:1-15

God many years before Solomon lived had told the people of Israel they were only to worship in one place no matter what.  God said He would tell them where this place would be and they would go only to that place to worship.  But, this was hard to do and so the people built their own local places to worship.  This was against what God had said.  These places were called shrines.  The Israelites worshipping at shrines is the beginning of their following a path away from God.

Solomon was one of the sons of King David.  King David had many sons but it was Solomon who was chosen to rule over Israel.  Solomon loved God and lived a God-honoring life.  We read that Solomon worshipped at local shrines because no temple had yet been built.    Remember he along with everyone else knew that God would tell them the one place to worship and worshipping at shrines was wrong.  Still, God saw Solomon loved God.  God appeared to Solomon in a dream.  God asks Solomon what Solomon wants.  Solomon replied that he wanted wisdom.  God is happy with Solomon’s answer.  God said because Solomon desired wisdom He would make Solomon the wisest person that ever lived.  Also God said he would give Solomon additional things such as wealth and fame.  Solomon wakes up and gives God many offerings to thank God.

Solomon does become the wisest person who ever lived.  His wisdom is found throughout 1 Kings.  Solomon also wrote several books of the Bible.  He wrote Proverbs, the Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes.  Solomon wrote two Psalms.

Old Testament – Psalm 119:129-136

This is the longest Psalm.  It is named the “Glories of God’s Law.”  No one knows who wrote this Psalm.  So this Psalm is known as one of the “Orphan Psalms.”

Watch the below video to see why it is called an “Orphan Psalm.”

This Psalm reminds us that all who obey God will enjoy a close walk with Him.  Psalm 119 also tells us that there are blessings when we do our best to obey God and his laws.  Listen below to the first eight verses of Psalm 119 and think about how you can do these things in your own life.

New Testament – Romans 8

We need to understand Romans 8.  It is the heart of what Christians believe.  Below is the main meaning of Romans 8. is very complicated but we

Romans 8 tells us how to live by the Spirit and let peace rule in our hearts. The Holy Spirit within us continually testifies to us that we are children of God. He gives us assurance with God to convince us that nothing will ever separate us from His love. This is a passage of hope because we know our future is bright in Christ.

Romans 8 is very complicated.  But, when we take each section one at a time we can understand it.  Below is a blog on Romans 8.  Each orange square explains the meaning of each verse of Romans 8.

Take each verse with your family a day at a time and talk about what these verses mean to you.

New Testament – Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52

Jesus again is teaching people using parables.  Parables are short stories that teach moral lessons or a spiritual truth.  Jesus tells five parables.  The first four parables show loving Jesus and following Him is the most valuable thing we can choose.  They also teach that there is nothing that is too small that Jesus can’t use for His glory.  So we need to remember each of us has an important job to do for Jesus. Jesus tells us we are never too young or too small to have an important part in His Kingdom.

Jesus’ last parable tells us what happens when we don’t choose to follow Jesus and obey God.  It is very sad because once more Jesus tells us that those who love Him go to heaven and those who chose not to love Him go to hell.
