Pentecost Sunday 7

Old Testament – Isaiah 44:6-8

God tells us in these verses that He is the only God. He reminds us that He knows everything that will happen in the future and He is in charge of the future. God says we don’t need to be afraid or worry since the future belongs to Him. This is important for us to remember right now when things seem scary.

God speaking through Isaiah says He is our Rock. Since He is Our Rock, we can respond to God’s love and live our lives in the joy of being with God.   In these verses, we are reminded that God knows everything. He also knows that we will struggle with our choices. Our choices will make us unhappy sometimes even when they are good choices. So God calls us not to worry nor be afraid because the future belongs to Him.

God also says through Isaiah that He is our Redeemer and He is the commander of all the angels in heaven. When He says this, He is saying there is no event or problem on earth or in heaven that He can’t win. So God is there even when bad things happen in our lives. When we are overwhelmed, God is right there with us wanting us to give everything to Him.  Giving these things over to God will free us. When we let God take control, we will live happier and better lives.

Psalm 86

King David sings this Psalm and asks for God’s protection. King David was often in danger and fought in many wars. King David tells God that he trusts God will save and protect him. David also says he is God’s servant. It is true that God is our heavenly Father and it is true that we serve Him and we are His servants. This seems strange to us. But, God has given us life. He loves and cares for us. God protects as we grow in faith. We thank God by serving Him and others. This makes us God’s servants.   As servants for God, we give back to God our love. By doing this, we point the world to God and Jesus.

New Testament – Romans 8:12-25

In these verses Paul tells us that we receive a new life when we believe in Christ. God through Paul says we are God’s children and we will have a wonderful life in eternity. God tells us that His own Son, Jesus, went through many hard times but now shares every good thing in heaven with God. So God tells us we will have hard times also but we need to stay strong because at the end we will be with Jesus and God and also share every good thing in heaven.

New Testament – Matthew 13:24-43

Jesus tells a story to people around Him. This story is about a farmer whose workers planted good seed. Then the workers see that weeds are coming up with the good seed. They tell the farmer what has happened. He says an enemy has done this. The workers want to pull out the weeds but the farmer says no. The farmer says wait until the wheat and the weeds have totally grown up. He says then it will be easy to tell the difference. The farmer tells his workers to pull up the weeds and burn them. But, he tells his workers to harvest the wheat and bring it into his barn. Jesus sends the people home and then explains the story to His disciples.

Jesus says the farmer is Jesus who plants the good seed. The field is the world. The good seed are the people who love Jesus. The weeds are people who don’t love God and others. The enemy is the devil. All those who don’t love God and others belong to the devil. The workers are the angels. Jesus explains that at the end of time He will tell the angels to bring all the people who love Him to heaven. But, the people who hate Jesus and others will be in hell with the devil. These are very hard words to hear and accept. But, Jesus is God. He is perfect in love and justice. It would not be justice to let the devil win and evil people have no punishment. Jesus’ love is perfect and He tells us that we who love Him will be in heaven with Him forever.

“Come You Thankful People, Come” is a hymn based on this story. Sing the words as you listen to it below.
