Pentecost Sunday 6

The Bible is divided into two sections. The first section is called the Old Testament. It records the story of salvation before Jesus came to live on earth. The Old Testament has the story of creation, the story of God’s people, the Psalms, Wisdom Books and the prophets. We read the Old Testament so we can see God’s plan for salvation.

The second section is the New Testament. The New Testament has the four gospels which are about Jesus. The four gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The New Testament also has the story of the first believers and what happened after Jesus went back to heaven. This is the Book of Acts. The last book in the New Testament is Revelations. Revelations tells us about Jesus’ second coming. Also in the New Testament are letters written by Jesus’ friends. The letters teach Christians what we are to believe and how to live. Romans is one of the letters that Jesus’ friends wrote.

Old Testament

Isaiah 55

Who was Isaiah? He is one of the prophets of the Old Testament. Remember a prophet is a person who speaks a message from God. Sometimes a prophet is only given one message to speak from God or many times as Isaiah was. Isaiah lived a long time and he gave messages from God over 64 years. Isaiah’s book tells about Jesus’ coming and describes Jesus. Today’s verses tell us that no word from God is without purpose. God tells us through Isaiah that every word God speaks will accomplish His plans. This is very comforting as it tells us God will always do what He says He will do.

Psalm 65

King David wrote this Psalm. This Psalm praises God for what God has done. Psalm 65 also thanks and praises God for the beauty of God’s creation. Today thank and praise God for the beauty of God’s world. Look around you to see how many different things God has made.

Below is Psalm 65 sung because all Psalms are songs. Enjoy!

New Testament

Romans 8:1-11

Paul in Romans talks about the power of temptation in a believer’s life. Temptation is when you want to do something you know is wrong and have to fight with yourself to keep from doing wrong. In these verses Paul says that knowing what we should do or not do is not enough. We will fail without the help of Jesus. Here we learn that trusting in Jesus makes us strong enough to fight temptation. We also learn that God is not happy when we are selfish. Paul tells us paying attention to Jesus will help us from being selfish and think about God instead. What wrong thing do you have to fight? This week ask Jesus to help you with your fight and how to do what makes Him happy.

The first two verses of Romans 8 – verses 1 and 2 are very important. They say what is central to our Christian faith. They say Jesus is the reason believers are able to come and stand before God This week memorize Verses 1 and 2 of Romans 8. Below is a fun song which sings Verses 1 and 2.

Listen and it will help you memorize these verses. Have fun!

Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

Jesus tells people a story about a farmer who threw seed everywhere. Some of the seed fell on rocky soil, some seed was choked by weeds, and some seed was eaten by birds. But, some soil fell on good soil, grew and produced a large crop. The people listening to Jesus didn’t understand and Jesus’ friends asked Him why he spoke to everyone in stories. Jesus reminds them of what Isaiah had written about Him and that Isaiah had said Jesus would explain the stories to His friends. No one else would be told. Jesus says the seed is the Word of God, the Bible. He teaches why each type of seed does what it does. Jesus says people who are not interested in Him will be the seed that didn’t grow. Jesus promises us that when we believe in Jesus we will grow in many ways. How can you grow for Jesus?
