Pentecost Sunday 2

Exodus 19:2-8

God tells his servant, Moses, to meet him on the mountain in the desert of Sinai.

Here God tells Moses that the Israelites will be God’s treasured people. God

reminds Moses to say to the Israelites that he carried them on “eagle’s wings.”

God also tells Moses that the Israelites will be a holy people and a nation of

priests. Later in the New Testament God will say Christians are treasured and are

called to be a holy people and a royal priesthood. What does all this mean?

Treasure is something that we love. So God is saying that we who love Him will

be treasured (loved) by him. Priests are a type of pastor. We think of pastors as

people who are very devoted to God. God promised the Israelites they could be

very devoted to God when they obeyed Him. God also promises Christians that

we can also be very devoted to God when we love Jesus and keep His

commandments.

Romans 5:1-8

Here Paul, a follower of Jesus, says that when we go through bad times that we

will gain many good things. These good things include being able to keep on

going even when we want to quit (perseverance). They also include building our

personalities to become strong (character). Paul tells us when we build

perseverance and character then we will have hope because God gives us His

Holy Spirit in our hearts. Learn a game that requires perseverance such as

checkers or scrabble.

Matthew 9:35-10:23

Jesus calls his 12 disciples here. Memorize their names. Jesus sends his 12

disciples out into their country, Israel. Jesus says they are not to take anything

with them but are to trust that people will feed them and give them a place to

stay. They are not to even take extra clothes. This must have been a very scary

thing for the disciples to do but they did as Jesus said. Jesus also told them to

tell everyone they met the good news that Jesus is the Savior of the World. The

disciples did this too. Think about who you can tell that Jesus is the Savior of the

world.

Thank you, Jesus, for opportunities to show compassion towards others.

Amen.
