Pentecost Sunday 10

Old Testament – 1 Kings 19:9-18

These verses tell about an event in Elijah’s life. Elijah was one of the greatest prophets who ever lived. Remember a prophet is a person who God speaks to directly to give other people messages. This event happens at a time when Elijah is very depressed and sad. Elijah spoke for God during a time when a very evil king and queen lived. The king’s name was Ahab and the queen’s name was Jezebel. Ahab and Jezebel had killed all of God’s prophets and many who believed in God. Elijah was running away to save his life and hides in a cave. God sends a scary wind so strong it splits huge rocks into pieces but He is not in the wind. Then God sends a large frightening earthquake but God is in the earthquake either. Then God sends a scary fire but God is not there. Then it was quiet. Elijah goes to the cave opening and waits for God. God finally speaks to him in a gentle whisper. God asks Elijah why he is hiding in the cave and Elijah tells God all about his problems with Ahab and Jezebel. God tells Elijah what to do and that God will be with Elijah.

This shows us that God speaks to us in quiet ways. He does not want to scare us. It also shows we can bring all our problems to God no matter how sad or depressed we are. God will give us the help we need and is always there for us.

Interestingly, there are two caves that are connected to Elijah. One of the caves is where this event took place. It is in the middle of the desert and it is on Mount Sinai. Many scholars believe it is the same cave where Moses met God. You can see it in the first link. The second cave is one where Elijah went all the time to pray to God and it is by the ocean.

Old Testament – Psalm 85

Psalm 85 says God will speak to His people. Believers will hear of God’s peace and God will give what is good. God’s peace brings steadfast love and faithfulness.

New Testament – Romans 10:5-15

Paul in these verses tells us that when we say we believe Jesus is our Savior and we believe God raised Jesus from the dead we are saved. Paul tells us that God is God of all and He is the God of all who believe in Jesus no matter how they look like and where they come from. Paul reminds us that we know Jesus is Lord because someone told us. Paul tells us our job is to tell everyone that Jesus is our Savior and God raised Him from the dead. Knowing this is what makes us Christians. This is so important we should know it by heart.

Below is a song which will help you know it by heart.

New Testament – Matthew 14:22-33

This is a time when Jesus is very sad. His cousin, John the Baptist, has been killed in a very cruel way by an evil king. He is tired and wants to be by Himself to pray. He has sent his friends away to row across the sea. A storm comes up while His friends are rowing on the sea and they are scared. Then Jesus comes walking on the water. This frightens them even more because they think He is a ghost. But, He says it is He. Peter asks if he can walk on the water to Jesus to make sure it is Jesus. So Jesus says come. Peter starts walking on water! Then Peter loses faith and starts sinking. Jesus catches Peter and scolds Peter for his “little faith.” Jesus helps Peter to walk on water back to the boat. They both get in the boat and all Jesus’ friends say to Jesus “You are the Son of God.”

This event is important because it shows that God/Jesus is there in all the storms of our lives. Just like God was there for Elijah, He is there for us. When we ask Jesus to save us, He will save us. We may lose faith and hope. But, God is there for us no matter how dark our lives are.
