Passover
The events of Jesus’ last week of life take place during Passover. Passover is the
remembrance of when God took the Israelites out of Egypt, freed them, and
would eventually take them to the land He had promised. The Israelites were, of
course, Jewish. Passover is a Jewish holiday and Jesus was a Jew. The last supper
which we remember on Maundy Thursday took place at the Jewish Passover
supper called a seder.
Old Testament – Isaiah 50:4-9
Isaiah is telling of the coming Messiah, Jesus’ sufferings. We are reminded that
Jesus was spit on, beaten, and finally put to death.
Old Testament – Psalm 31:9-16
Psalm 31 mirrors the words of Job. Job’s story is written in the Book of Job. Job
is a man who suffers horrible things and he actually says these words.
Philippians 2:5-11
This writer reminds us that Jesus lived a sinless, obedient life and death. As a
result, God gave Jesus a name above all other names in the universe. At the
name of Jesus, every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.
Mark 11:1-11
Jesus enters Jerusalem as a king sitting on a young donkey. A large crown follows
Him shouting “Hosanna. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.”
