Fourth Sunday of Epiphany

Old Testament – Deuteronomy 18:15-20

Here Moses tells the Israelites that in the future God will send another prophet

like him from among the Israelites. Moses was speaking of the future Messiah,

Jesus Christ. Moses tells the Israelites they must pay attention to what Jesus says

and God will hold them accountable.

This is a powerful reminder for us also. We must pay attention to what Jesus says

and remember that God does not want us to disobey.

Old Testament – Psalm 111

This song praises God for all His creation. It delights in God’s ways and His

personality. It sings the glory of His righteousness, truth, and justice. This psalm

reminds us that respecting and loving God is the beginning of wisdom. Below

hear a young Indian artist, Swetha Mohan, sing this beautiful song.

New Testament – 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

When Paul was alive, people sacrificed living animals to idols. They would then

eat this meat. Some Christians at that time thought this was wrong as they

believed this was idol worship. But, Paul says no. He says there is only one God it

doesn’t make any difference if it was sacrificed to a false god. Paul says the most

important thing is to respect the other person’s viewpoint.

So what does this mean for us today? Our culture has made certain food choices

a “lifestyle.” People who don’t follow that “lifestyle” are wrong. Paul teaches us

that God doesn’t care what we eat or don’t eat. God cares that we respect each

other and not turn trivial issues such as food into a battleground. We all can ask

ourselves this question. Where can we be more respectful and considerate in our

lives especially in small things?

New Testament – Mark 1:21-28

Jesus heals a demon possessed man in a Capernaum synagogue. The demon

recognizes Jesus for who He is – the Son of God. Everyone is surprised because

they had never seen anyone cure someone from demon possession. They are

surprised at Jesus’ power and authority. We forget that Jesus is God and as God,

Jesus has all power and authority over everything in the universe. Next time you

feel worried remember Jesus, the king of the universe, loves you.

Younger Children's Lesson:

All today’s lessons talk about God’s power. God’s power should not scare us. His

power is one of the reasons why He can protect us from everything at all times

and all places.

Today Jesus cures a man who was sick. Choose someone to be Jesus and

someone to be the sick person. Act this story out.

Today we read Psalm 111. Below is a video with dancing and verse 10 from this

psalm. Dance along and sing along.
