Old Testament – Isaiah 40:21-31
This passage of Isaiah was written when the Israelites were living as refugees and
exiles in Babylon. God speaks through Isaiah and tells them He is the creator and
ruler of the universe. While the Israelites feel forgotten, God tells them He even
has names for all the stars so He has not forgotten the Israelites. God tells them
to wait for Him and gives them the below blessing.
31 but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
So when you feel forgotten or discouraged remember God is always there for you.
Memorize Verse 31 and say it daily as a reminder of God’s powerful love. Listen
to all of Isaiah 40:21-31 sung below.
Old Testament – Psalm 147
It isn’t known who wrote this lovely song of praise. This psalm sings the glories of
God and the wonders of His creation. This song also tells the Israelites that they
will return home and rebuild Jerusalem. The psalmist also reminds the Israelites
that God has numbered and named all the stars so He will not forget His people.
Tonight look up into the sky and know God has names for all the stars even ones
we can’t see. Then know He loves you so much that we will live with Him forever.
Listen to the below hymn based on Psalm 147.
New Testament – 1 Corinthians 9:16-23
Paul tells us that he has a responsibility to tell others about Jesus and the gospel.
Paul says that he makes sure he includes all types of people when he is telling
others about God and Jesus. Paul says he makes his words mean to each
group of people when he speaks about Jesus.
This is an important lesson for us. We also have a responsibility to tell others
about Jesus and the gospel. We also need to include all types of people when we
speak about God and Jesus. We also need to make our message meaningful to
each person.
This week think about who you can tell about Jesus. If you are uncomfortable
about sharing the gospel, ask God to show you how to do this.
New Testament – Mark 1:29-39
This event in Jesus’ life takes shortly after He has called the twelve apostles. Jesus
goes to Simon's (Peter’s) home. Peter’s mom-in-law is very sick and Jesus heals
her. She then gets up and serves them dinner. This seems strange to us.
Someone who just has gotten well is making dinner for everyone. Our lesson
from this is everyone can serve no matter what their circumstances.
Afterward, everyone in the town brought their sick and people who were demon
possessed to Jesus. Jesus healed them.
The next morning Jesus woke up while it was still dark so He could pray. Peter and
the other apostles looked for Him. When they found Him, they said “Everyone is
looking for you.” Jesus tells them this is why He came. Jesus came to proclaim
that everyone who believes in Him will live with Him for all eternity.
We need to think about when and how often we pray. Jesus who was perfect and
the Son of the Father prayed often and long. We who are not perfect need to
match His example. Do you set aside a time of prayer every day? If not, start
now.
Younger Children's lesson:
All of today’s lessons tell us that God loves His world and us. He even has names
for the stars. He tells us that when we trust Him that He will make us strong.
Today’s lessons show us that Jesus cured sick people. We also learn that Jesus
prayed a lot.
This week learn the names of stars and where they are in the night sky. Find the Big
Dipper and the Little Dipper. Do you pray? This week start to learn a prayer that
Jesus taught us. It is called the Lord’s prayer. The words are below.
Our Father who lives in heaven,
Holy is Your Name,
Your kingdom will come, What you want us
To do be done here on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our food. Forgive us as we forgive others.
Don’t let us stray but keep us from doing wrong.
For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and glory forever.
